What to Expect During a Mobile Notary Appointment in California
What happens at a mobile notary appointment?
A mobile notary meets you at an agreed location, verifies your identity, performs the requested notarial act, and completes the required notarial record and certificate. Mobile service changes where you meet; it does not remove California’s identification or personal-appearance requirements.
With Book CA Notary, Mary reviews the meeting details and itemized quote before confirming your appointment. An online request alone does not reserve a time. See the mobile notary service overview for appointment options.
Before the visit: a practical checklist
- Have the complete document available, including any notarial certificate and instructions from its recipient. Resolve missing information with the document preparer rather than asking the notary to supply legal wording.
- Confirm acceptable identification with Mary before the visit. Do not assume that any photo ID will qualify.
- Ask the document recipient or your attorney which notarial act is required if the instructions are unclear.
- Disclose any witness requirements, the number of signers, and the estimated number of notarizations. Witness arrangements are not guaranteed.
- Provide the address, preferred time, parking or entry instructions, and any accommodation needs.
- Plan a suitable signing surface and a setting where the signer and notary can communicate directly.
If the document requires a jurat, wait to sign in the notary’s presence. For an acknowledgment, an earlier signature may be acknowledged during the appointment. Confirm the applicable procedure before signing.
During and after the appointment
Mary checks the identification and document information needed to perform the requested act. California acknowledgments involve the signer appearing and acknowledging execution; jurats also require signing in the notary’s presence and an oath or affirmation. The signer signs the notary journal, and a thumbprint is required for certain documents, including powers of attorney.
The notarial certificate and seal relate to the notarial act. They do not certify that the document is legally suitable or that a receiving organization will accept it. Book CA Notary does not provide legal advice or choose document wording.
Before the meeting ends, review practical next steps with the document recipient: where to send the document, whether an original is needed, and any delivery deadline. A notarization appointment does not by itself include filing or delivery.

Common appointment questions
Can someone else attend instead of me?
For an acknowledgment or jurat of your signature, you must personally appear before the notary. A family member cannot simply bring your document for a stamp in your absence.
How long will it take?
The time depends on the documents, signers, identification, and any facility coordination. Share those details when requesting the visit rather than relying on a fixed appointment length.
What if my document is incomplete?
The California handbook says a notary must refuse a document that is known or clearly appears to be incomplete. Contact its preparer or recipient before the appointment.
